Since Jasmin was born I haven’t let breastfeeding dictate my wardrobe. I have had a look around at nursing tops but not found much that I like or much that flatters me. Most are cross-over at the neck or wrap-around at the waist – and neither style do much for me. Others gape too much at the neck. What I have been wearing instead are my normal clothes with a vest underneath. When I feed Jasmin, I pull up my regular top and pull down a vest which I always wear now beneath my clothes.
I’ve accumulated a selection of black vests specifically for nursing. All have stretched around the top as a result, but all allow me to wear clothes of my choice without me being restricted by their style. One day, when I’m not breastfeeding anymore, they’ll all be thrown out. I can’t right now though, imagine not wearing them!
I hadn’t heard of the Breastvest before being offered a chance to review it. It’s specially designed for nursing mothers and makes it possible to wear your own regular clothes while breastfeeding. It works in a similar way to the vests I already wear. But, crucially, the top of the front panel is cut lower than your breasts. This means the top of it comes and sits just under your bra. I tried the black vest, although it does come in other colours, and wore a size small as I am usually a size 10.
It’s a fantastic concept and I’m really impressed by the idea. Practically, it works really well. It means that there is no vest to pull down when you are trying to start to feed a hungry baby. The only layer you need to move is your top – pull it up. And of course, unclip your bra. Not having another layer to fiddle with when you’ve got a baby desperate to feed is brilliant. The fit was really good, snug and comfy.
The best thing about the vest, for me, is that it still offers full coverage of your tummy area. I’m not in any hurry to flash my post-pregnancy tummy to anyone right now, and with the breastvest I know it’s covered up while I feed. Phew.
I’d highly recommend the breastvest if you are nursing. It’s so nice to wear clothes which you would wear if you weren’t nursing. To wear these after having Jasmin really picked up my confidence. I no longer felt like I needed to wear special maternity clothes. I was back to being me.
I love breastfeeding Jasmin, who is now seven months. And I definitely love doing it in clothes of my choice! (Oh, and here’s a pic of the breastvest and one of me in my normal clothes wearing the breastvest – you see – you can’t even tell I’ve got it on….
*I was sent the breastvest for the purpose of this review, which is my honest opinion. All images and copy are my own.
